Hard to believe, but fall is right around the corner and it’s time to think about your fall lawn maintenance. No doubt, the temperatures still feel like summer, but fall is coming. These warmer temps also mean we must care for our lawns a bit different from our friends in the North.
As you prepare for the fall, we found a great checklist from Pennington. Below are things you should do next month to keep your lawn in pristine condition.
September
- Reduce watering of warm-season grasses; needs decrease as rains increase, But never allow turfgrass to be stressed by lack of water, or it will affect spring green-up.
- Treat established lawns with pre-emergent herbicides before cool-season winter weeds germinate, when nighttime air temperatures approach 65 to 70 Fahrenheit.2
- Overseed for temporary green winter color with cool-season perennial ryegrass. When warm-season grass begins losing color, it’s time.
- Keep newly overseeded areas consistently moist while seed establishes.
Fall Planting Tip
- Begin planting trees and shrubs this month. Planting in autumn allows them time to grow roots and transition into the garden.

- As temperatures begin to cool, plants need less water. Adjust your watering schedule for lawns, borders, and containers. Pay close attention to containers as they tend to become waterlogged.
